I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

III. OPERATION OF GROUND BASED EQUIPMENT

A. GROUND SEEDING GENERATORS
The general outline for initiating ground seeding operations was described in
Section II. The details csf the operations of the ground generators will be
given here. Fig. 3-1 shows the location of the proposed ground generator net-
work with respect to the target area. Twenty-three generators will be avail-
able for operation. Six of these (B1-B6) will be manual generators. The DRI
generators are shown with the letter "0", SMUD with the letter "S" and PG&E
with the letter IIplI, they will all be operated by remote control.

The forecaster should continuously monitor for ground seeding opportunities.
Once the decision is made to begin a ground "seed" operation, the ground
generator version of the GUIDE will be run using all available input data to
determi ne what parts of the target area can be di rect i ona lly targeted with
i ndi vi dual generators. Once thi s is determi ned the on-duty forecaster will
contact the appropri ate i ndi vi dua 1 s as 1 i sted on the form in fi g. 2-3 and
inform them as to the generators that need to be ignited. The requested start
and end time of all generator operations should also be noted on the coordina-
tion form shown in fig. 2-3. Again, if a randomized "no-seed", these times
should still be documented in order to identify the period of the experimental
unit. For a "seed" case, these times should be confirmed with a follow-up
call to generator operators after the 6-hour period is over and noted on fig.
2-4. For verification purposes the operators of the manual ground generators
will keep a log sheet as shown in fig. 3-2. It is desired that the appropri-
ate generators be ignited 2 hours before expected conditions develop in order
to achieve adequate horizontal and vertical dispersion. The experimental unit
length will be 6 hours for ground seeding. A 3-hour purge time will be

I II-I
