when moisture and temperature conditions are favorable for infec-
tion. Changes in the period of flushing could, therefore, affect
the coincidence of inoculum, favorable weather, and susceptible
tissue. Possible effects of such a change are unknown, but they
would probably be small, since early and late flushing are equally
likely during periods favorable and unfavorable for infection.
Early flushing increases the likelihood of frost damage to foliage,
and late shooting subjects new growth to the hazards of high tem-
peratures or excessive insolation. Thus, effects are largely
unpredictable.

A special project to monitor phonological effects seems unneces-
sary, but might fit into vegetative monitoring and could prove
useful in later correlations with disease or insect activity.

SoiZ moist~. - Increased precipitation may lead to elevation of
water tables, particularly in the flat terrain around lakes and
meadows. Lodgepole pine in these sites are often killed by
Mountain Pine beetle where water tables have been elevated by road
building near South Lake Tahoe. Weather modification will most
likely reduce the frequency of "low water table years. II

The span of the root system can affect the distance that such dis-

eases as F. annosus root rot are likely to spread between trees~

1-12
