Dr A J Heymsfield of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in
Boulder, Colorado, for their invaluable advice and encouragement tl1roughout
this study. I would like to express my appreciation to the Weather Bureau in
the Department of Environment Affairs, the Water Research Commission and the
University of Arizona who sponsored my visit to NCAR to wor~ on the research
discussed in this thesis. Specifically I would like to thank Mr P S du Toit
of the Weather Bureau and Dr R Gall of the University of Arizona who on
numerous occassions provided valuable encouragement and ideas regarding this
study. Special thanks should go to Dr W Hall of NCAR who provided special
guidance in getting myself acquainted with the numerical model. NCAR deserves
special acknowledgement. in providing the computer resources and administrative
support. The numerous interactions with other NCAR and University of Arizona
staff proved to be extremely stimulating and helpful during the course of the
