I would like to express my appreciation to the Weather Bureau in <br />the Department of Environment Affairs, the Water Research Commission and the <br />University of Arizona who sponsored my visit to NCAR to wor~ on the research <br />discussed in this thesis. Specifically I would like to thank Mr P S du Toit <br />of the Weather Bureau and Dr R Gall of the University of Arizona who on <br />numerous occassions provided valuable encouragement and ideas regarding this <br />study. Special thanks should go to Dr W Hall of NCAR who provided special <br />guidance in getting myself acquainted with the numerical model. NCAR deserves <br />special acknowledgement. in providing the computer resources and administrative <br />support.
