<br />Section 3. - PROBE Stations <br /> <br />Nine surface meteorological stations were used by the CRADP during the 1985-86 <br />field season. All stations were of the PROBE (Portable Remote Observations of <br />the Environment) type, but they had a variety of sensors. Table 3-1 provides <br />a numerical identification of the stations as well as sensor assignments by <br />channel. <br /> <br />The PROBE stations transmitted data hourly to the GOES-Central Satellite, <br />which then transmitted the data to the Divisionis downlink facility at the E&R <br />Center in Lakewood, Colorado. <br /> <br />Station TOW (called G12 until mid-January) was located at the WAPA (Western <br />Area Power Administration) microwave tower atop the Grand Mesa. The wind and <br />icing rate sensors of the PROBE station were mounted at the 70 m level on the <br />tower, the other sensors were at the surface. Station G13 was similarly <br />equipped, but located on the northern tip of the northwest arm of the Mesa. <br /> <br />Station GM2 was located at the GMO (Grand Mesa Observatory) near the WAPA <br />tower. The wind sensors that had been at this site were removed in deference <br />to the superior sensors and siting of TOW. Sensors included at GM2 were a <br />Setra pressure transducer, EG&G temperature and dew point temperature sensors, <br />and Weathertronics temperature and relative humidity sensors. <br /> <br />Station RRS was located on the northern shore of Island Lake, near the Grand <br />Mesa Lodge. Itls sensor compliment included a Belfort snowdepth gauge, and a <br />weighing precipitation gauge. The precipitation gauge reported cumulative <br />precipitation, in millimeters. Also at this site were wind speed and <br />direction sensors. <br /> <br />Stations GM3, GM5, GM6, and GM7 all had temperature, humidity, and wind <br />sensors. GM7 had radiometer liquid water and water vapor in channels 2 and 3, <br />but did not have a humidity sensor. <br /> <br />Station ISL was set up to test a new precipitation gauge type that used <br />voltage output by a load cell instead of the conventional Belfort weighing <br />mechanism. This station had none of the usual parameters, but only parameters <br />directly relating to gauge performance. <br /> <br />All data for the field season were integrated for 4 min 38 s time blocks every <br />5 minutes. Table 3-2 gives the DCP (Data Collection Platform) I.D.ls, <br />locations, and transmission times for all stations. <br /> <br />3-1 <br /> <br />
