cloud, as intended. While this is not an unexpected finding, it

validates a portion

of the North Dakota

hail suppression

conceptual model. Other progress included studies of the initial
steps in precipitation formation, which on the northern Great
Plains most often relies upon the development of ice particles in
the young clouds. At this time it appears that the time required
for ice to form in a developing cloud may play a large role in
whether or not the cloud produces hail or primarily rain.
Ultimately, this may prove to be the key to optimizing hail

suppression efforts.

5.1 PUblications

The following

publications resulted

from the

Board's

Cooperative

Research program in the 1989-91 Biennium:

Anantharaj, V.G., 1990: An exploratory study of the summertime
observation by a dual-wavelength microwave radiometer at
Dickinison, North Dakota in 1987.
