4.2 Intern Pilot Program
This program offers training for commercial pilots in cloud
seeding theory and practice. The course of study for these
students runs a full year with two classroom courses taught at UND
and a summer internship in the field. Students chosen for the
summer internship are fully licensed to fly the seeding aircraft,
and serve as co-pilots. Beyond the safety advantages of having two
qualified pilots in each aircraft, the intern keeps records of
times, aircraft position, seeding conditions and chemical usage.
Much of this information is later entered into computer files so
that the seeding locations can be correlated with radar data and
other information. The Board does not pay the intern co-pilots a
salary; however, they do receive a per-diem allowance to cover
living expenses while in the field.
The end result of the program is a pool of qualified pilots
who are capable of effectively and safely seeding clouds. Weather
modification contractors nationwide draw upon this group for
seasonal weather modification projects allover the world.

4.3 Wheat Yield Study
Wheat yield statistics for all counties in the western half
of North Dakota are being analyzed by scientists and statisticians
at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Colorado
State University. The comprehensive statistics, compiled at North
Dakota State University for the years from 1935 through 1988, have
so far been analyzed for two periods; from 1935 through 1951, and
from 1973-1988. The first years represent the "historical"

-21-
