<br />4. RESEARCH AND EVALUATION <br />Each biennium the Board receives limited funding from the <br />state to support research and evaluation projects relating to <br />weather modification. This includes climatological analysis, <br />technology transfer, operations evaluation, and design and <br />evaluation of new instruments or techniques. Many of these <br />important efforts, so crucial to the Board's success, would not <br />otherwise be possible. <br /> <br />4.1 Rain Gauge Network <br />A substantial portion of the research supported and done by <br />the Board consists of maintaining an extensive rain gauge network <br />throughout the state. During the 1989-91 biennium the network of <br />rain gauges numbered about 800. Cooperative observers send in <br />monthly rainfall summary cards which contain the daily rainfall <br />amounts along with hail size and damage estimates. These cards <br />are collected from April through September and archived in <br />computer files from which rainfall statistics can be computed and <br />plotted on state maps as in Fig. 8. <br /> <br />-19- <br />
