The
information obtained during this study will provide a set of specifications for a meter
designer / manufacturer to develop a meter appropriate for residential secondary water
metering. A better understanding of irrigation water quality and how meters perform in this
water will also aid in selecting the combined metering and filter technology for this application.
Both mechanical and electrical meter technologies will be addressed.

3.2 Project Goals

Specific goals of this study include, but may not be limited to the following:

. Complete a thorough investigation of all available types of meter brands and designs

. Develop a basic set of specifications for residential secondary water meters

. Document water quality of major supply sources in Utah, Salt Lake, and Weber counties.

. Document how existing meters perform (and have performed in the past) under adverse
conditions such as erosion, corrosion, blockage, chemical buildup, water hammer, and
freeze-thaw

. Determine the minimum filtration requirement for existing meters

. Find an existing meter(s) that performs best under specified water quality constraints in
different areas

. Determine how existing meters can be improved to perform more favorably in
secondary water applications

. Publish results of the study and recommendations for design of a new /modified
product

8

~
.:
