Utah, for example, receives an average 13 <br />inches of precipitation annually. Because of this arid climate, lawns and gardens require <br />extensive irrigating to keep them green and lush. The environment and critical ecosystems of <br />the western states will continue to be strained as populations grow and more water is <br />consumed for domestic and irrigation uses. Conservation programs do and will continue to <br />help preserve the environment by reducing the amount and size of water diversions.
