Groundwater Production
. Groundwater is produced from 489 federally owned and operated wclls and 236 privately
owned wells (725 total)

. Groundwater is used to augment surface water supplies delivered at the NIB, SIB, and
Limitrophe Division

. Sources of groundwater recharge to the Colorado River aquifer include underllow frol11 the
U.S. across the limitrophc and sm, seepage from the AAC, and recharge resulting from the
application of water for irrigation in Mexicali and San Luis Valleys (e.g. seepage from
unlined canals, ditches, and drains; over-application of water on irrigated lands)

. The Rio Colorado Irrigation District has up to 727,000 acre feet of groundwater available
during nonnal years when Mexico is delivered 1,500,000 acre-feet

. Private well owners extract an unspecified amount of groundwater, but irrigate
approximately 60,000 acres

. Estimates of groundwater production vary from 500,000 to 1.000,000 acre-feet pcr year. The
magnitude of groundwater production appears to be related to the magnitude of Colorado
River water delivered at the international boundary (i.e. high flow years cquates to less
groundwater production)
