Water Supply Reserve Account – Grant and Loan Program
Water Activity Summary Sheet

Applicant :
Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District; Lower South Platte Water Conservancy
District; and the Colorado Division of Water Resources
Water Activity Name :
Stage Discharge Data Logger and Telemetry Installation Project
Water Activity Purpose :
Structural Activity
County:
Denver, Weld
Drainage Basin:
South Platte
Water Source:
South Platte River
Amount Requested:
$ 48,800
Source of Funds:
Basin Account
Mat ching Funds:
Yes, applicants will provide in - kind services related to the installation of
equipment.

Water Activity Summary :
This project would allow installation of stage discharge data loggers and cell phone modems on
diversion structures and return flow augmentation structures to provide real time flow information.
The principle focus will be on structures on the mainstem of the South Platte downstream of Denver
and upstream of Kersey (District 2). Data loggers and telemetry has already been set up on most
major diversion structures downstream of Kersey in a cooperative program between N orthern Water ,
LSPWCD, and DWR with some support from the C olorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB)
funding of the DWR’s hydro graphy program.

The only cost associa ted with this grant will be to purchase equipment. As in - kind service, p urchased
equipment will be installed i n coordination with the various ditch companies by D WR, LSPWCD
and/or N orthern Water representatives. In addition, these agencies will set up nece ssary networking
to transfer, store and present the information on the Internet. D ata loggers and telemetry allow for
continuous information for users and administrative staff concerning flows. The project will provide
an excellent compliment to the State ’s existing diversion and stream gage satellite program and is
also complimentary to the work being done for the Colorado Decision Support System in obtaining
better data concerning river flows and diversions.

While the installation of this equipment will help with administration because of the availability of
real time information on all diversions, the primary benefits of this grant will be u sers who utilize the
equipment as discussed in the previous paragraph. Even users not directly benefiting from ob taining
equipment on their diversions will be benefited because these users will have real time information
concerning other diversions . This information allows users to verify what they and other users are
diverting to confirm that diversions are being l imited to decree amounts. Data loggers also eliminate
the workload of ditch users and water commissioners to break down charts.

1
