Sherman <br />Executive Director <br />Rod Kuharich <br />CWCB Director <br />Dan McAuliffe <br />Deputy Director <br />CONGRESSIONAL HEARING HELD ON PLATTE RIVER LEGISLATION <br />Yesterday, flee House Natural Resources Committee, Subcommittee on Water and Power held a hearing on <br />H.R. 1462, the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program and Pathfinder Modification Authorization Act. "This <br />legislation lends credibility to the idea that irrigation and restoration can occur together," Chairwoman Napolitano remarked. <br />Ted Kowalski, the Program Manager for the Colorado Water Conservation Board lauded this collaborative, <br />cooperative effort. "By pursuing recovery of these species on a programmatic basis, as opposed to pursuing recovery efforts <br />on a case-by-case basis, we will use our resources more efficiently and effectively." <br />Water users also supported the legislation before the subcommittee. Alan Berryman, Assistant General Manager for <br />the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District described the program as a "cooperative, basin-wide solution that resolves <br />conflicting water use and ES.~ issues." <br />Dan Luecke testified for the National ~Uildlife Federation and several other environmental organizations. Mr. Luecke <br />stated: " ~Ue believe that there is a clear need for an endangered species recovery program in flee Platte River flrat is basin wide, <br />comprehensive and cooperative... The recovery program honors all these key principles." <br />Congressman Mark Udall praised Colorado and the representatives of Wyoming and Nebraska for their ability to <br />reach resolution through communication. Representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Reclamation, <br />Wyoming, and Nebraska also testified in support of the legislation. <br />Similar legislation is pending before the Senate, S. 752 and the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee, <br />Water and Power Subcommittee held a hearing on S. 752 on Wednesday, April 25. <br />Flood Protection • Water Supply Planning and Finance • Stream and Lake Protection <br />Water Supply Protection • Conservation and Draught Planning <br />
