Bill Ritter and other top state officials applauded U.S.
Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne Thursday for signing an agreement to
manage the Colorado River during drought years to protect the state's water
interests.
"With climate change looming and added water development pressure because of
unprecedented population growth in the southwestern United States, we need to
develop creative solutions such as this," said Ritter.
Kempthorne signed a Record of Decision (``ROD") for the Colorado River Interim
Guidelines for Lower Basin Shortages and Coordinated Operations for the two
major reservoirs on the Colorado River, Lakes Powell and Mead.
The agreement represents the final step on an agreement bet`veen the seven basin
states that rely on water from the Colorado River on managing the water supply
during times of shortage and how to coordinate the operations at Lake Powell and
Lake Mead.
"By continuing a dialogue between the seven basin states, we have been able to
craft a proposal that encourages cooperation between the states in the future," said
Ritter.
Water Supply Protection • Watershed Protection & Flood Mitigation • Stream & Lake Protection • Water Supply Planning & Finance
Water Conservation & Drought Planning • Intrastate Water Management & Development
