June 14, 2006
Public invited to view Elkhead Dam
construction
The Colorado River District is holding a unique "open house" from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June
20, where the public can walk across the Elkhead Reservoir Dam and view the construction work
that will raise the dam by 25 feet to almost double the reservoir's water storage.
Ray Tenney, project manager for the Colorado River District, said this is an extraordinary
opportunity for Moffat and Routt county citizens to view the construction site that is otherwise
strictly off limits to the public for safety reasons.
The time has been set aside when Ames Construction workers are finished for the day. Visitors
are asked to be mindful of safety instructions that will be given at the site. River District personnel
will be available to point out work areas and answer questions.
Members of the public will be able to drive a short distance into the restricted site and will be
asked to park about 100 yards from the dam's western end. Those who want to walk across the
dam to see the ongoing work progress will be making about athree-quarters-of-a-mile roundtrip.
To reach the open house, take Moffat County Road 29 to the main reservoir entrance (which is
still marked officially closed). Proceed past the construction trailers on the left to a designated,
marked parking area.
Construction activity at the dam will soon begin to raise its height. The project is scheduled to be
completed by late November and the reservoir will refill in the next spring runoff. Next spring,
work will begin on improvements to Colorado State Parks facilities.
For more information on the open house, contact Tenney at (970) 945-8522, ext. 220, a-mail
rtenney@crwcd.org; or Jim Pokrandt at (970) 945-8522, ext. 236, email jpokrandt@crwcd.org
