Yampa River Programmatic Biological Opinion-
What does mean for future water development?
The Yampa River PBO was initiated in response to
endangered species issues along the Colorado River. This
document allows for the continuation of existing operations
on the river, and allows for up to 50,000 acre feet/year of
new consumptive uses in the basin. The PBO simplifies the
consultation process with the US Fish and VVildlife Service
under the Endangered Species Act.
~ Compact Entitlements:
The Colorado River Compact and the Upper
Colorado River Compact affect the entire
Western Slope, and entitles Colorado to
beneficially consume 51.75 % of the total
water available in the Upper Colorado River
Basin. Presently, consumptive use in the
Yampa & White total approximately 190,000
AF.
This study was undertaken to develop long-term water demand projections in the Yampa River Basin, as a
part of the Yampa Fish Recovery and Water Management Plan, which is part of the Recovery Program for
Endangered Fishes of the Upper Colorado. Projections where developed out to the year 2045. Below is a
table from that study showing projected water diversions in 2045.
