Arkansas River Basin Water Use Growth & Water
,
Demand Pro~ections
J
Department of Natural Resources-Colorado Water Conservation Board
This is part of the CWCB's continuing effort to help
communities determine whether their existing water
supplies are adequate. This latest effort began in 1999
with a conservation survey of local governments,
publication and distribution of a dam site inventory,
and series of ineetings in each major water basin. Tasks
yet to be completed include the publication of water
information fact sheets, a drought planning assessmentl
carry-over storage assessment, and these preliminary
growth and water demand projection fact sheets. These
materials and others are available at our website.
Greg Walcher
DNR Executive Director
Rod Kuharich
CWCB Director

Basin Population by County (2~
BaS111 StatlStlCS - These numbers give a general
overview of the current (2000) and future (2030)
statistics within the basin.
Year Population Irrigated Total Current
(2) Acres (5) Diversions Useable
(7) Storage
(6)
2000 811, 442 574, 000 2, 502, 000 415, 300
acre feet acre
feet
2030 1, 258, 000 574, 000 2, 604, 000 415, 300
acre feet acre
feet
Percent +55% 0% +3.9% 0%
Change
Arkansas River Basin Projected Future Water Demand: S~ (5,7)
3000 -
2500
„ Native Supply
~ Total DemandslDiversions
~ 200o Total Surface WaterAvailable
~
' °~-Irrigation CU
0
s
v Municipal CU
~ 1500 ~~~.~~~Total CU
~
~
~
~
~
~
L 1000
a - - - .
500
0
2000 2010 2020 2030
Year
S~ Native Supply =
Undepleted, unregulated
available surface water.
Total Demands/
Diversions = Total
amount of water removed
from the stream, some
water may return to the
stream if it is not
consuptively used.
CU= Consumptive Use =
amount of water that is
consumed and lost to the
system while applying
water to a beneficial use.
Total Surface Water
Available = Native
Supply + Imports from
other basins.
Imports =148,000 AF
March 2002
Z ~ Y W p ~ W W ~ Q } Q W fA ~ p ~ O N Q Q
o W a Q Q ~ z~ z ~ m=~ z~ w z Q ~ ~
~ J
~°J° a ~ a W W Q~~ 3~~ 3°° ~~~ z°° cn
~ W w~ w=~ ~ a c~ ~ ~ ~ w Q O
~
U U~ ~ ~ a = J U
