Major tributaries to the <br />South Platte include Tarryall, Plum, <br />Bear, Cherry, Clear, Boulder, Big Dry, <br />and St. Vrain Creeks; and the Big <br />Thompson and Cache La Poudre <br />Rivers. Between 1990 and 2000, the <br />population in this basin increased by <br />31 percent and now accounts for <br />68.9 percent of the state's total popula- <br />tion. The graph below lists populations <br />for the portions of the counties that are <br />in this basin. <br /> <br />Central Colorado <br />Lower South Platte <br />Northern Colorado <br />St. Vrain and Lefthand <br />Upper South Platte <br /> <br />Agriculture is the predominant water <br />use, with approximately 2.0 million <br />acre-feet per year used for irrigation <br />of 1.1 million acres. An additional <br />880,000 acre-feet per year of <br />groundwater is applied for irrigation; <br />and 100,000 acre-feet per year of <br />groundwater is used to meet munici- <br />pal, domestic, livestock, industrial <br />and commercial purposes.
