There are
also 142 lakes with decreed natural lake levels. These
decreed water rights are held by the CWCB to
"protect the natural environment to a reasonable
degree." The decreed flow or lake level for each of
these instream flow segments is based on the flow or
lake level required to maintain the water-dependent
natural environment.

Source: Colorado Water Conservation Board

Wet and Dry Periods

Every year, Colorado experiences at least one 100-year
flood somewhere in the state. Colorado's total estimated
flood losses to date are $4.9 billion. The basin's most
recent major flood event was May 21-26,1984. The
estimated total historic damages for this basin are
$109.5 million to date.

Major Imports into the Basin

None

Major Exports from the Basin

Name

Diversions
(acre-feet)
207,488
64,330
60,931
48,994
42,070
26,652
18,122
9,551
4,598
2,834

1 * Adams Tunnel
2 Roberts Tunnel
3 Boustead Tunnel
4 Moffat Tunnel
5 Twin Lakes Tunnel
6 Homestake Tunnel
7 Grand River Ditch
8 Continental Hoosier Tunnelt
9 Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel
1 0 Wurtz Ditch

* Numbers in the above table correspond to numbers that
accompany arrows on the basin map (p. 5).

t Continental Hoosier Tunnel exports from the Colorado
Basin to the Arkansas Basin through a portion of the South
Platte Basin.

Source: Division 5 1998 Annual Reporl, 10-year average

Green Mountain Reservoir (Photo courtesy of Theresa Stone)

June 1995
Upper
May-June 1984 Colorado River
Colorado River at Grand and tributaries
Junction floods flood

June 171965
Blue River at
Breckenridge floods

May 1993
Government
Creek / Rifle
Creek at Rifle
floods I

June 1957
Colorado River floods at
Grand Junction and Roaring
Fork River floods I

---~

-

Dry

Avg

Wet

c.

ro
ill
(J1

ill
o
o

ill
o
(J1

~
o

ill
o

~
(J1

~
o

ill
U;

ill
{.oJ
o

ill
{.oJ
(J1

Source: Colorado Water Conservation Board

June 1983
Colorado River at
Grand Junction floods
I

n

~
(J1

ill
(J1
o

~
o

~
(J1

~
(J1

~
o

ill
(J1
(J1

ill
<Xl
o

ill
<Xl
(J1

ill
ill
o

ill ill
~~

C Colorado River Basin Facts - 3 )
