Sherman
To: Colorado Water Conservation Board Members Executive Director
Dan McAuliffe

From: Ray Alvarado CWCB Acting
Director
Dan McAuliffe
Date: October 30, 2007
Subject: Agenda Item 17d, November 14-15, 2007 Board Meeting -Non-Reimbursable Investments,
Estimated 2005 Water Use in Colorado
Introduction
This request is for funding for the estimating 2005 Water Use in Colorado. This proposal seeks to present the
2005 Colorado water-use data that have already been compiled by county for the National Water Use Information
Program (NWUIP) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in a published report specifically for Colorado. For FY
07-OS, an appropriation of $66,400 is being sought from the Construction Fund to complete this
study. This is the first request for funding for this study; the USGS will be contributing $16,200 towards
this study.
Discussion
A detailed report of Colorado water-use data categorized by basin and water-use type has not been
published since 1985 (Litke, 1989). This study will present the 2005 Colorado water-use data that have
already been compiled by county for the NWUIP in a published report specifically for Colorado. This
project would extend the differentiation of water use in Colorado, beyond that done for NWUIP, to each
major surface-water basin and to ground-water withdrawals by selected aquifer. Water-use would be
categorized by use for public supply, domestic, irrigation, livestock, aquaculture, industrial, mining, and
thermoelectric power.
The USGS will work with the CWCB Water Information Group in developing a detailed scope of work to
insure that the published data is in a useful format and included the information that can be used in CDSS,
as well as, other sections of the CWCB
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Board request the General Assembly authorize $66,400 from the Construction
Fund to be appropriated to the Colorado Water Conservation Board for work tasks associated with the
2005 Water Use in Colorado Study.
Colorado Water Conservation Board
Flood Protection • Water Supply Planning and Finance • Stream and Lake Protection
Water Supply Protection • Conservation and Draught Planning
