of landscape changes, such as golf courses where there is basically no recharge.
Golf courses use water to keep the grass green and that is it.
±
The low flow of water creates additional sediment and other water quality
problems.
±
Explore expanded use of reused water. Reuse is not being used enough
anywhere in the state. There are some isolated instances such as an industrial
park in Broomfield and a new pipe that Denver is installing. Chicago is using
reuse extensively, so why aren?t we? We joke about water intakes being located
downstream of our treatment plants. If it?s clean after treatment, why can?t we
reuse it? A best use guide on reuse for municipalities would be helpful.
±
My lawn is dry, but we have to make a choice between nice green medians and
lawns around buildings and having sufficient water supply to meet all our needs.
We don?t have enough water for public areas; we need to cut down the use of
water for beauty?s sake. This is true for the entire state and not just our basin.
±
The city of Steamboat Springs has been on voluntary water restrictions because it
had extra water, but most municipalities in Routt County were on mandatory
restrictions. The town of Hayden was short on water. The water restrictions that
were put in place were probably the most extreme the basin has seen. Additional
conservation measures should be considered.
±
Return flows are particularly important in narrow valleys like the White and the
Yampa. They are an important part of our irrigation system. These return flows
that are used over and over again are the best example of efficient water use.
Miscellaneous:
±
The Town of Yampa actively purchased water rights when they became available,
which put them in good shape in terms of having water rights for expansion.
±
Yampa, Craig, and Walden are becoming bedroom communities for Steamboat
Springs, which is changing the nature of the basin.
±
We don?t know what additional water quality restrictions regulators may impose.
The EPA appears to be getting to the point that its requirements are going to push
the price of water to the point that it will be $250.00 per month for water. We are
looking at raising our water and sewer rates to $44.00 per month, which is a lot
more than Denver.
