San Juan/Dolores River Basin
Bayfield, Colorado 9.3.03
45
Municipal, agricultural, recreation
Increase storage, improve management of water resources and develop more
funding options: More storage is needed to support the growing population in the
basin. Major studies, including one done by Bayfield, are investigating supply and
demand, and storage opportunities. The basin may have enough water now, but
with projected growth there may need to be additional reservoirs, or at least
better management of existing water resources. Better water management
includes water conservation and reuse. Funding options also will need to be
developed to support future projects.
Education is needed to make the public aware of the need for conservation:
Literature and public education about conservation and reuse programs are
needed.
The SWSI process needs to be inclusive: Getting the best people at the technical
meetings is critical. SWSI Technical Roundtables should include representation
from oil and gas companies as they are major users of water in the basin. It is
important to find ways to work with the other states (Utah, Arizona, New Mexico)
in the Four Corners area because they also use the water from Colorado.
Alternative solutions for expanding water supply should be explored by SWSI:
Science-based solutions should be explored to augment traditional means for
increasing water supply. SWSI should explore water solutions such as expanding
existing storage sites, reuse, cloud seeding and treatment and use of gray water.
Division of Wildlife, gas and oil companies, and scientists should be included in
Technical Roundtables; also Colorado Municipal League.
Share any current literature available to education community about conservation.
Consider developing a glossary of water terms for people to use.
Consider a forum that explores new science-based solutions and technologies for
better water management, as well as scientific research.
ÙÞÍÓô ÍÉÍ× Ð«¾´·½ ײº±®³¿¬·±² Ó»»¬·²¹ Í«³³¿®§ô ïïòïðòðí п¹» ï
