CLOUD SEEDING, DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
ASSOCIATED WITH THE COLORADO RIVER AUGMENTATION
DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM
Report Number WM-87-5

1.0 INTRODUCTION

For approximately the past 20 years, the Bureau of Reclamation
(The Bureau) has conducted weather modification research under
the name of Project Skywater. This project has the overall
goal of developing an effective weather modification technology
for precipitation management to serve a portion of the Nation's
water needs. The Colorado River Augmentation Demonstration
Program (CRADP) field program is being conducted through the
Bureau's Division of Atmospheric Resources Research (DARR)
headquartered in Denver, Colorado.

The major objectives of the CRADP are to investigate
and improve cloud seeding technology in the Colorado River
Basin, to improve the technology's cost-benefit ratio, and
to refine suspension criteria.

The Bureau established the Montrose Skywater Office in
August 1983, to support field investigations of winter orographic
clouds and their modification on the Grand Mesa of western
Colorado. A limited exploratory data collection program was
conducted on the Grand Mesa from mid-January to mid-February
1983. This was followed by more extensive data collection
field programs carried out from November 1983 through March
1984 and November 1984 through March 1985.

1-1

I
f,
I
I
,
,I
t
,
I
,
I
I
I'
,
I,
I
J
i,
I
