for later computer processing to determine crystal S1zes and
concentrations and to estimate the snowfall rate.

The 2D-C probe observations were supplemented periodically
(about once an hour) with 35 mm photographic slides of the
ice crystals that settled on a glass plate during a known
exposure period. A strobe light slaved to the camera shutter
illuminated the crystals. The system was operated in a small
shelter with a 10-inch diameter "chimney" which allowed ice
crystal fallout into the shelter.

2.4.6

Rawinsonde System

A Weather Measure RD-65A rawinsonde system was employed
in the Verde River Valley near the town of Camp Verde (see
Figure 2.1). Soundings from this site provided information
on the atmospheric structure upwind of the Happy Jack region
of the Mogollon Rim.

The system consisted of an antenna assembly, antenna
control unit, receiver and strip chart recorder. The chart
record provided temperature, humidity, pressure level and
reference signal traces. The automatic tracking system incor-
porated a digital printer and an averaging unit for recording
the elevation and azimuth angles to the balloon-borne radiosonde
instrument. NAWC personnel released 112 balloon-borne instrument
packages from this site during the field program.

2.4.7

Precipitation Gauge Network

Belfort weighing precipitation gauges were maintained
by NAWC at the seven locations shown on Figure 2.1 and listed

2-15

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
