There are two distinct
sections on its upper stretch between Aspen and Basalt.
(1) The "Slaughterhouse" section, beginning at Stein Park and ending at Wink Jaffee
Park, is a Class rv to rv + run that mainly challenges intermediate to advanced kayakers
and experienced rafters. Less than 5% of commercial use takes place here.
(2) The "Woody Creek" section, starting at Wink Jaffee Park and ending at "Wingo
Junction", is a Class III to 111+ section of water which has become very popular both
with experienced and inexperienced commercial rafters. Depending on water levels,
children as young as 10 are typically able to raft this section. When the water is low,
children as young as 6 can make the trip. Over 95% of the current commercial use
takes place on the "Woody Creek" section of the Roaring Fork.
Both of these sections provide the BEST opportunity for guests in the AspenlSnowmass area to
experience our local rivers. The Roaring Fork is a classic fast water river, with mnnerous rapids
and constant excitement. When the flow on the Roaring Fork drops, and we are unable to boat
here, guests are required either to make the long journey to the Arkansas or drive to the less
pristine (and 45 miles away) rapids of the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs. The Upper
Roaring Fork is truly "Aspen's" river. Our guests love it!

-

2) SEASONS: The rafting season on the Roaring Fork can extend from mid-May through mid-July,
depending upon snow pack and how a regulated runoff is implemented. A typical "high water"
season extends from mid-May to the 2nd week in July. During a 'low water" season, use still
begins around mid-May, but ends as early as the 2nd or 3rd week in June (see Figures 1& 2). A
typical season provides us with enough water to get through the busy 4th of July period without
needing to travel down valley to Glenwood Springs. Aspen and Snowm~ss guests appreciate the
close proximity of this river resource - so do the commercial companies and their guides.

Error!
