SUMMARY
POTENTIAL GRAND VALLEY LAKE

*.***.*.******.******..*.**..*.**********.**.****.....*********..*********.*

The potential Grand Valley Lake would be located on Sink Creek, south of Central Orchard'
, Mesa, on the western flank of the Grand Mesa. It wo~ld. be ideally situated to serve the multi
water needs of the Grand Valley for the next 40-50~years~ (SEE MAP)

The Grand Valley Lake (GV Lake) is proposed as an option to the popular but long beleaguered-
potential DomingUez Reservoir on the main stem of ~e lower Gunnison River~

The GV Lake would:
· Exclude the costly Peaking Power component of Dominguez, (a dubious need in todayts market)
· Eliminate major Railroad and road relocations
. Avoid Petroglyphs disturbances .
· Minimize endangered fish species con~rns ~d perhaps improve options
· Maximize Water~ityforthe Grand-Valley'
· Eliminate sediment, heavy minerals, salinity and selenium loading from the Uncompaghte River drainage basin.
· Eliminate the poor lake shore access of the Dominguez Reservoir
· Significantly improve recreation access to a large 1xKly of water
· Eliminate taking agricu1turalland out of production, _
· Eliminate the relocations of various properties within the Gunnison River corridor
· Eliminate wilderness infringements and ~oncems.

The GV Lake would provide several opportUnities for improvements for the Orchard. Mesa
Irrigation District and at the same time solve som~ or all of the endangered fish problems in the
fifteen-mile stretch of the Colorado River below Palisade. -
· It could release water directly into Orchard Mesa e,tisting canals at Sink Creek. And leave historically pumped
water in the eoiorado River for endangered fish. Or the GV Lake could serve all of Orchard Mesa '8 water needs
and eliminate the aging Palisade Hydraulic Pwpp, ing Station.
· The GV Lake could store any future water collected from Grand Mesa~
· The GV Lake would have unlfurited shore access and invaluable recreation potential.
· The Aqueduct serving the GV lake could po~sibly be used to develop sOlY-e irrigation land between Delta and
Grand Junction, "if desired. .
· The L3ke's elevation would make minimal energy requirements for M&I water deliveries throughout the
G~d. .

Minor relocations would be required in the construction of the GV Lake.
· About three miles of major transmission line: would llaye to be ~el~ted.
· Some housing properties near the dam site may have to be relocated.
· Other concell)S to be addressed include ~aporation from the Lake

Preliminary data sugge~ts the Lake could store as much as 200) 000 acre-feet of water with a
surface area up to 2000 acres. The dam could be as much as 240 feet high.

· Water availability is of no major concern at this time.
· An estimat~ cost is not available at this time.
· The Gunnison Aqueduct would be about 60 miles in length and divert at a point just below the confluence of the
North Fork and the Gunnison River in Delta COlUlly. Preliminary feature sizing would be conducted WIder a
pre-feasibility (reconnaissance level) funded smdy. .

tI
