administration very soon all \vells will have to install meters. ccv."rCD also has S40 million
in CWCB loans in an attempt to take a leadership role and addres~ this large well is~ue.

South Platte Basin Agriculture Facts
The economic contribution to five counties in northeastem Colorado of agriculture helped by
3,500 irrigation wells along the Soutb Platte River is about $130 million, according to a study
released by Colorado State University. The study considered vegetable, sugar beet, alfalfa
and grain production along the river dependent upon inigation wells. Total crop revenue
contributed by crops sUPP0l1ed by the wells was estimated to be $79.4 million \vith grains
such as corn and alfalfa hay contributing $58 million. Another $40.6 million was attributed to
potential losses to agricultural-related businesses such as crop consultants, real estate sales,
livestock producers and equipment dealers. Another ripple of losses to community businesses
such as groeery stores, gas stations and restaurants was estimated to be $10.8 million.

Conclusion
The Central Colorado Water Conservancy District is working very hard to keep its 1000
member wells in operation in the ever-changing landscape of the South Platte River Basin.
Increased growth and scmtiny Oil well pumping, along \vith the worst drought in over 300
years, have caused the CCWCD to seek additional water supplies. If the Chatfi~ld storage is
obtained, it will be one step in maintaining the economies of the region, while preserving the
current wildlife habitat that thrives on irrigated agriculture in the District.

TOMU

Tom Ceeh
Executive Director, CCWCD
