(Questioner) What about native grasses? They need 6" of water for the first 24 months.
What can we sustain without irrigation? There's a hybrid wheat grass. What other
species?
Robert -There are some introduced species that work very well. We need to get rid of
"native" designation and open our thinking.
Tim -This is not CRP but CREP, we can put hybrids and nonnative species into the mix.
(discussion of grasses and species. Vegetative components that will work and get
established.)
Tim -Proposed Timeline for the draft proposal > implementation by next April maybe.
Erin -Are there any other CREP applications in Colorado?
Tim -Colorado has two - RR and High Plains CREP
MG -Remember that we're looking at sometl>ing that this RT approved. We approved
$36,750.00 funding through SB 179 program.
Tim was thanked for making himself available and his presentation)
Dinner break
6. Mike Sullivan -Division Engineer: Rio Grande Flows and Compact.
A quick update on the RG -- We went for a while without any curtailment. Mike
explained why he put a curtailment on the RG.
Graph of RG at Del Norte -The whole hydrograph has shifted over this year closer to
historical flows. Perhaps due to late October 2006 moisture.. Another graph of the
Conejos River near Mogote; MRCS projected water year 2007 -We're way ahead of the
MRCS predictions, so we've had to put a curtailment on the system in order to meet our
Compact commitment. Showed us forecasts for June to Apr-Sept compared to Actual
flows April to July, and the projected aimlual flows.
(Handout)
JB - I thought the Compact had to do with amlual flows -why are we worrying about
this day to day when at the end of the year we could just satisfy our annual commitment.
Mike S. - We don't have a reservoir sufficient to store this much water. When the
forecast is up we need to try to deliver. We stay up on our deliveries in order to avoid
extensive and tedious law suits.
Minutes, August 14, 2007 5 Rio Grande Basin Roundtable
