General location of the study or demonstration project. (Please include county, and approximate distance <br />and direction from the nearest town): <br />The entire Arkansas River Basin, from Leadville to the Kansas Stateline, including Fountain <br />Creek and other major tributaries. Counties include: Lake, Chaffee, Fremont, Pueblo, EI <br />Paso, Otero, Crowley, Bent, Prowers and Las Animas. <br />4. Please provide a brief narrative description of the proposed study or demonstration project including <br />purpose, need, and service area. (Attach scope of study, if available) <br />The SECWCD utilizing the USGS has begun a study of longterm water quality data needs in the <br />Arkansas Basin. Phase 2 of this study will be funded pursuant to this request and will focus on detailed <br />analysis and sampling to narrow and recommend measures to solve critical data needs. The results of <br />Phase 1 will be available in approximately 2-3 months and be utilized to prepare a detailed Scope of <br />Work with the CWCB during the contracting process. Water quality concerns with Kansas and within <br />the Basin have been longstanding problems, the purpose of this study is to collect data to lead to <br />improved scientific approaches to assessment and potential solutions to those controversies. Major <br />water supply projects such as PSOP, Southern Delivery Sysytem, and John Martin Reservoir operations <br />are affected by these controversies. The Colorado WQCD is supportive and interested in partnering on <br />this type of project. <br />2 <br />
