Name of the study or project: Purgatoire River Channel Capacity and Improvement Study <br />2. What is the purpose of this grant application? General location of the study or demonstration project. (Please include county, and approximate distance <br />and direction from the nearest town): <br />Las Animas County from Trinidad Reservoir, downstream approximately 15 miles, including <br />the City of Trinidad. <br />4. Please provide a brief narrative description of the proposed study or demonstration project including <br />purpose, need, and service area. (Attach scope of study, if available) <br />Since the construction of Trinidad Reservoir the river channel below the reservoir has <br />degraded reducing the ability to safely pass high volume flows required by downstream water <br />rights, including those Arkansas River Compact. This study will determine the current safe <br />flow capacity of the channel, and in Phase 2 recommend additional studies and work <br />necessary to restore the channel to historical capacity. Trinidad Reservoir will be <br />administered consistent with this channel capacity. There is the potential for riparian <br />restoration work, including Tamarisk and Russian Olive control as part of the work needed to <br />restore the channel capacity. <br />2 <br />
