SEITIIIFIVE

Rio Blanco Countv

5.2.2 Flow Data

Most of the flooding appears to have occurred along several intermittent streams prone to flash
flooding during heavy rain events. When these streams flow full, they often carry loose riparian
vegetation and soil. The deposit of this debris is what caused the majority of damage during
these events. Unfortunately, these intermittent stream flows are not monitored and therefore
could not be analyzed, but the major rivers that collect this runoff are gauged and were analyzed.

Flow data along Piceance Creek, White River, and Yellow Creek in the affected areas during the
time period discussed above was obtained through the USGS surface water monitoring program
(http://water.usgs.gOv). The data collected can be seen in Figures 5.2-2 through 5.2-5. Station
locations are shown on Figure 5.1-2.

Figure 5.2-2
Daily Discharge for Piceance Creek Below Ryan Gulch, Colorado -
May through October, 2001

c
z
o
U
LL.J
en
0:::
LL.J
Q..
I-
LL.J
LL.J
LL..
U
""""'
Q:I
:J
U 10

USGS 09306200 PICERNCE CREEK BL RYRN GULCH1 NR RIO BLRNC01 CO.

200

100

..
LL.J
~
0:::
a:
::c
u
en
""""'
c
~ 1
""""'
a:
c

Hay 01

Jun 01 Jul 01 Rug 01 Sep 01
DRTES: 04/15/2001 to 10/15/2001

Oct 01

EXPLRNRTION
--- DRILY HERN DISCHRRGE
--- HEDIRN DRILY STRERHFLO~ BRSED ON 35 YERRS OF RECORD
X HERSURED DISCHRRGE

Figure 5.2-2 reveals that during the majority of the storm events in July and August the flows in
Piceance Creek where actually below normal except for one large spike in the latter portion of
August.

URS

T:\PROJ ECTS\6844888 _ CWCB _FLOOD_DOC _RPTS\SUB _00\6.0 _PROJ_DELlV\REPORT\FI NAL REPORT .2.
