floodplain vegetation, and sediments originating from mine waste piles may also be toxic or
unsuitable to natural vegetations. The transport of large boulders through the area during high
flows could also cause damage to hydraulic structures in the area including the masonry flume.

Mine timbers, cribbing, and natural woody debris is scattered throughout Upper Willow Creek.
This debris will be easily mobilized during a flood event and could quickly plug or damage
culverts, bridges, or flumes. Timber debris may be the most immediate risk to flood damage in
Upper Willow Creek, and may also be one of the easiest problem to fix.

This study identified sediment sources in the Upper Willow Creek watershed and evaluated the
potential for these sediments to be transported into Willow Creek. Sediment transport was
evaluated to examine locations of high sediment transport and potential sedimentation rates. The
amount of timber debris within creek channel throughout the study area was also briefly
examined.

1-8
