.

~

An honest assessment is not always pleasant, but it can be
of major importance to the success of a project.
The following is a short list of suggestions based on the ex-
periences of the Grand Junction design team effort.
- Spend all the time necessary to ensure the quality of the
team before it is chosen. Investigate references and projects
completed for other communities. Talk to professional
organizations which may be familiar with the work of the
potential member.
- Send sufficient background material to the team members
well in advance of the site visit. The material should include
an overview of the community as well as information on the
specific project being addressed. Maps, aerial photography, and
photographs are helpful and will save time during the actual
site visit.
- Prepare a detailed planning strategy and send it to all team
members, so each will know what to expect. Once the team
arrives and begins the task, the strategy can be adjusted to
meet specific needs.
- Have all logistical details worked out prior to team arrival.
This includes transportation, lodging, meeting rooms, press
coverage, work materials, staff support, etc.

36

...' ,.1' .~. ..' -....^' '~.~ .'''~_
<,: ._"":v..,. .. e'.' ,""..
