Turning this barren ground
into a park site that has a sense of old-fashioned refinement
was one of the major proposals of the design team, The team
proposed that the site be graded and planted with grass and
trees, with a Victorian style series of latticed trellises that define
the space and which frame a central focus of a Victorian style
gazebo (see figs. 7-9).
It is important that these elements be done in a truly Vic-
torian style by an architect that is sensitive to the nuances
of this sort of work. This entire setting should create
a sense of entry to the city, as well as a specific sense of arrival
at the city edge. This feeling is reinforced by the commissioning
of a Grand Junction Totem.

The Grand Junction Totem
The concept is to create a strong element that greets the
visitor entering or leaving the city on U.S. Highway 50 which
