I

.

Acknowledgments

The NEA Riverfront Design Project was a very exciting component of our overall project. Our appreciation is extended
to Senator William Armstrong and his staff for their support of our grant request.
There were many people responsible for making this project a success. We wish to acknowledge those who shared
their ideas and expertise with the design team members: Patty Schrader, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Bill Clark
and Alan Czenkusch, Colorado Divsion ofWildlifej Carlos Sauvage, BLMj Brian Mahoney, Ward Scott, Judge William
Ela, Pat Gormley, Jane Quimby and Rebecca Frank, Riverfront Commission; Don Macdonald, Department of
Energy/UNC; Dave Davis, Western Colorado Center for the Arts; Marce Teas, Mesa County Planning; Ted Ciavonne,
Ciavonne & Associatesj Ted Novack, City Parks and Recreation; and Tom Kenyon, Colorado Division of Parks &
Outdoor Recreation. A special thanks to Dave Fishell, local historian, who entertained our guests with stories of years
gone by and was available throughout the team's visit to share historical facts.
The project would not have been possible without the cooperation of the affected landowners. The following property
owners provided invaluable information to the design team: Frank Dunn, Bill Serviss, John Crouch, Dean VanGundy,
Tom Lewis, Butch Jarvis, Rev. Paul Thomas, Roy Gamble, Phyllis BoHan, Pat Belcastro, Frank Randall, E.M. Yeager,
and Charles Pennal.
Special thanks to Jon SchIer with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs for providing three talented landscape
architect students to work with the design team. We also thank Jeff Kelley who drafted the base maps used by the team.
Logistical support from two local agencies made it possible for the design team to tour the area. Thanks to U.S.
West Telecommunications for providing a helicopter tour and Mesa County Transportation Services for providing a
van for the ground tours.
Finally, we'd like to thank the design team members, City staff, and the community for their support and enthusiasm.
The designs and strategies developed will be invaluable in the redevelopment of the Colorado Riverfront through Grand
Junction.

ii
