e

e

/
I
.1

Mark Sawyer
February 2, 1993

ranges. Starting with the area below 9000', I used increments of 1000' in elevation up to
12,000'. The first table shows the area in square miles. You will see two numbers in each
cell of the first table, one in italics and one in a regular font. The number in italics
represents only the area in that specific elevation increment. For the final column, "TOTAL
D.A.", that means only the area above 12.000'. The number that is not in italics represents
the cumulative area. By the way, you will find slight differences between the areas
calculated by the Corps of Engineers for their hydrology report and the areas that I
measured. I don't think the discrepancies are significant.

The second table shows the distribution of drainage area by percentage. As was the
case with the first table, you will see two numbers in each' cell. The italicized number
represents the percentage of the total basin or subbasin area in that elevation range only.
The other number represents the cumulative percentage of the total drainage area. The
intent of the second table was to address the question of whether there were obvious
difference between the three branches of Gear Creek with respect to elevation distribution.

DRAINAGE AREA IN SQUARE MILES

D.A.
