Figure 2. Map of the radar-estimated rainfall on the morning of May 28, 2005. The black core within the grey
region near Brownfield, Texas indicates that the rainfall here exceeded 120 mm. A maximum of 8 inches (200
mm) was actually measured in this region.
th
There were multiple broken layers of clouds in the project area of May 29. The project aircraft were
deployed toward Portales, New Mexico and then northward toward Hereford, Texas. Suitable clouds were
found too late in the day for a seeding mission. Although project aircraft were deployed again toward Portales,
th
New Mexico on May 30, a salt seeding mission was conducted ultimately in clouds to the north of Plains. The
clouds proved to be marginal and the tracer gas was not detected as a consequence.
st
There were early morning thunderstorms in the local area on May 31, and later cloud developments
warranted yet another deployment toward Portales, New Mexico, where successful salt seeding missions were
st
conducted in this area in two clouds. It was overcast with low clouds on the morning of June 1, but these
nd
cleared off to shallower, higher-based, stratocumulus clouds for the rest of the day. June 2 was also suppressed
25
