It can be concluded that the physical chain of events (1 through 4) starting from the characterization of
the aerosols and the CCN at cloud base to the formation of precipitation in young deep convective
cumulus has been systematically documented during SPECTRA 1. The aircraft in situ observations and
the subsequent analysis of the data have successfully established the microphysical links between the
CCN and the precipitation forming mechanisms across the state of Texas. For the first time, a thorough
documentation of the CCN distribution at the cloud bases and their effect on the cloud drop size
distribution and precipitation forming mechanisms is available.
Recommendations
It is recommended strongly that the next steps in Texas in the development of an operational cloud
seeding technology should involve an interactive program of measurements and cloud modeling. The
initial focus should be continued model validation using the observations that have been made to date
and on the making of new observations that are needed critically for model validation. Cloud models are
showing increased sophistication with each year and much can be accomplished now by their use,
especially in understanding how glaciogenic and hygroscopic seeding affects Texas convective clouds.
5
