Figure 6: Flight tracks during SPECTRA 1 for which CCN data are available.
3.3 Data analysis methodology
3.3.1 CCN and cloud physics data
The DAQFactory aircraft data system (see Appendix A) acquires and logs data from the CIP, CDP,
AIMMS-20 and the PCASP. The CCN counter has an onboard Lab VIEW data system. This data is saved
in individual files and retrieved after each flight. Post processing of the aircraft data starts with systematic
checks for errors in each data file, synchronizing all the data files, performing calculations, and creating a
collective data file for further analysis. The collective data file is of an ASCII format and includes all the
fields defined in table 2 above. Once all the data fields are synchronized in one file, several plots are
created to ensure that the data is within thresholds that are physically conceivable. This process was
usually conducted immediately after each flight.
After the SPECTRA 1 field campaign came to an end, several other plots were created to investigate the
relationship of certain key microphysical properties. A group of plots was first created and distributed
amongst the PIs, and discussions then followed on how the plots could be improved. The final process of
the analysis was to decide on a small set of informative plots that best describe the microphysical
th
properties of the convective clouds. As an example, a set of plots from 19 August 2004 is presented in
figure 7 below accompanied by a comprehensive explanation to describe how the plots were created.
27
