Section
3
3.Instrumentation, data collection and data
analysis
3.1 List of the data collected during SPECTRA 1
Each instrument on the SOAR research aircraft creates an text file for each hour of data logging. The
ASCII data analyzed during SPECTRA 1 originated from a data field selected from a set of data
parameters logged from each instrument text file. After each flight, the flight meteorologist collects the
data from each instrument and processes this data to check for errors, synchronize all the data from all
the instruments, perform calculations, and creates ASCII data files for further analysis. Table 3 shows the
data fields that were processed in such a manner. To keep the list brief, the instrument quality flags and
the housekeeping parameters have been omitted from the list.
Field Measurement Unit Description - instrument
System time Hours, mins, secs Data system time – Data acquisition computer
Time corresponding to each data point in the exported output.
GPS time Hours, mins, secs GPS time – GPS module AIMMS-20
Longitude/Latitude Degrees DGPS aircraft position – GPS module AIMMS-20
GPS altitude Meters DGPS altitude above Mean Sea Level (MSL) – GPS module AIMMS-20
Barometric pressure Pascals Barometric pressure – ADP module AIMMS-20
True airspeed Meters per second Aircraft true airspeed – ADP module AIMMS-20
Vertical wind Meters per second Vertical wind – IMU module AIMMS-20
Wind direction Degrees Wind direction– IMU module AIMMS-20
Wind speed Meters per second Wind speed – IMU module AIMMS-20
Heading Degrees Aircraft heading – GPS/IMU module AIMMS-20
Temperature Degrees celsius Reverse flow air temperature – ADP module AIMMS-20
Relative humidity 1/100 % Relative humidity (reverse flow air) – ADP module AIMMS-20
CDP total particle count Cloud Droplet Probe total droplet count – CDP
Total concentration on all channels
CDP number conc cm Cloud Droplet Probe number concentration (calculated) - CDP
-3
The total number of particles per unit volume sampled
CDP volume conc Cloud Droplet Probe volume concentration (calculated) – CDP
m cm
3-3
Volume represents the total volume of the particles per unit volume
sampled.
