Summary of 1994 Fresno County Land Use Survey
. (acres x 1,000)

002023

/

The 1994 Fresno County survey study
area encompassed the San Joaquin Valley
floor pOrtiOR of the county. including
52 percent ofthe county's 5,963 square
miles of land. O(the nearly 1.7 million
acres in the study area, over 1.3 million
'are currently developed for irrigated agri-,
culture. The San Joaquin Valley trough
divides the study area roughly in half.
About 95 percent of both the county's
population and permanent crops (trees
, and vines) are east of the trough. The area
)west of the trough is sparsely populated,
and dominated by field and truck crops.
Areas outside of the study area are gener-
ally mountains and fqothills covered with
native vegetation.

Fiel? work for DWR land use surveys is
organized by 7-1/2 minute U.S. Geologi-
cal Survey quadrangle maps. The Fresno
County study area includes all or part of
- , .
66 USGS quads. Survey results are sum-
marized by 24 crop groups, plus broad '
. ,
categones of urban development and na-
tive vegetation. /

Compared to the 1986 and 1979 DWR
surVeys. total land acreage in crops in th~

I

---

Fresno County study area has decreased,
althou~h there was some acreage increase
in truck crops, trees, and vines--especial-
1y almonds and vineyards. Urban devel-
opment also has increased. but grain and
field crops, as well as native vegetation
acreage. have decreased. Cotton, the larg-
est single 'crop in the county, experienced
a net decrease of over 110,000 acres
since 1979, the largest decrease among ,
field crops.

In 1992, DWR began converting all
current land use survey rnaps into a
standardized digital formaCfor processing
in a computerized geographic information
system., For the 1994 Fresno survey. GIS
technology was used to generate spatial
chang~s of lam! use between the 1986
and 1994 surveys; the rnapped results
are fOund in the report.

Irrigated Crop Groups 1979 1986 1994 Change 1979-1994
Grains & Field Crops &72.3 725.7 630.9 (241.4)
Truck Crops 102.3 159.4 219.2 116.9
Trees & Vines 344.4 377.5 405.9 61.5
Total Irrigated Crop Acres 1,319.0 1,262.6 1,256.0 (63.0)
Urban 85.6 100.0 136.9 51.3
Native Vegetation 294.1 280.6 206.6 (87.5)

5

/
'"
