Preliminary
hydrologic data about the January 1997 flood event are rep-
resented by charts and tables showing reservoir operations.
Agricultural water use information is'Contalned in the article
on a land use survey of Fresno County. Environmental man-
agement options are illustrated by a table offunding
sources for restoration-programs. A potential urban water
supply option for State Water Project contractors is de-
scribed in'the article'on conjunctive use in the Sacramento
Valley.

We are compiling information about these and other top-
ics as we begin producing the next bulle1:i11. Our schedule
calls for a public review draft to be' released by January
1998. fbllowed by public hearings in the spring. and release
of the fmal bulletin late in 1998. We are working with our
Advisory Committee as we prepare parts ofothe report's text
and begin assembling the' pieces into a whole. ~n contrast to'
the process envisioned by Nobel prize-winning author Jorge
Luis Borges, who noted that ''Time forks perpetually toward
innumerable futures. . .", we have before us the process of
distilling many trends into a unified picture of the future in
year 2020.
