<br />Introduction <br />This Special Flood Hazard Information Report for the South <br />Platte River in Weld County~ Colorado was prepared by the Omaha <br />District~ Corps of Engineers~ under continuing authority provided <br />by Section 206 of the 1960 Flood Control Act (Public Law 86-645)~ <br />as amended. The report was requested by the Colorado .Water Con- <br />servation Board. The purpose of this report is.to present informa- <br />tion describing the South Platte River and its flood plain in Weld <br />County relative to past flooding as well as to potential future <br />flooding. This report basically shows the relationship of the 1973 <br /> <br />.' <br />.,- flood on the South Platte River I n We I d County to the I DO-year <br />flood. Information on the IO-~ 50-~ and SOO-year floods is also <br />p'resented. The Information provided varies from stage-discharge <br />relationships at each cross section in the rural areas to water <br />surface profiles in the urban areas. Throughout the study reach~ <br />flood widths have been indicated at each cross section location. <br />The infonmation in this report is intended for use primarily <br />by planners concerned with the area. This report does not Imply <br />any Federal interest or authority to zone or regulate the use of <br />the South Platte River flood plain In Weld County; this is a local <br />responsibility. The report provides a suitable basis for the <br />adoption of land use controls to guide flood plain development <br />with consideration for environmental attributes~ thereby prevent- <br />ing intensification of loss problems. Since it Identifies flood <br />problems~ the report wil I stimulate the development of other flood <br />damage reduction techniques such as flood control, removal of <br />obstructions and flood proofing~ which might be used in an overal I <br />Flood Plain Management (FPM) program. <br />Distribution of the report to offlclals~ agencies~ and Indi- <br />viduals concerned with planning in the area covered is made by <br />Weld County. The Corps of Engineers wil I provide interpretation <br />and technical assistance~ if requested~ In application of the <br />report data.
