.. .. .' Qualifications Educational and Professional Background I have a background in both. (tlvll en~eering and recreations. planning. I currently 'hold" a Bachelor's degree'in Civil Engine~g from the Colorado School of Mines and a Master's in Public Administration from University of Wisconsin. My jQb experience has been primarily in , engineering. As an engineer I have focused on streambed restoration and design and have become one of the most experienced whitewater recreation boating design ~ in the , c6untry today. My first design was the South Platte urban renewal project in 1978 aDd I have been the designer for over 40 whitewaterlboating projects since that time. My background hi planning gives me unique expertise in the design of paries that are functional for all skill levels. These parks have ~ very well received by their I~ communiti~ and have hosted numerous national level events such as the {J.S. Olympic festival, Junior Olympics, Open Boat Nationals and top-I~vel rodeo events. Many of these projects have become tomist attractions that,have had a significant effect on the I~ economy. One ~ample of this is the Clear Creek project, in Golden, Colotado, which.has been credited. witbJ:~rb.1gingJl..'ter twomilli~n dollars a year into the local economy. I curr~ntly operate my own de~ign firni, Recreati~nal Engineering and Planning, which specializes in whitewaterlboating park design. Founded in 1983, Recreation Engineering and Planning (REP) is based in Boulder, CO and has become the country's leader in whitewaterlboating and riverside deSign. With over twenty years in the business, REP has been responsible for over 40 in-stream design projects- more than half of all the whitewater and boating paries in America. REP's work varies in size . from small projects that are tasked with designing a single play wave to iarge projects such as the North Platte River Project in Casper, Wyoming. REP has been involved in most of the proj~ at their inception and, has worked with the I~ communities through the entire process. REP ,has experience in all facets of these projects including permi~g, public process, deSign and construction. . ,'", ' , , Paddling Background I have been involved in kayaking and whitewater sports for over 40 years. .My involvement includes membership Qn the U.S. National Team (1980, 1999), head of the National Organization of River Sports (NORS) as well as numerous recreational paddling plD'SUits. I . began at the- age of 4 when I first 'paddled with my father, who was also ~ avid paddler. I have becOme proficient at all sortS of paddling events including slalom-the Olympic discipline of paddling-freestyle, wildwater, and river running., In the course of my paddling career I have paddled on a variety of white water courses in both America and Europe and am an expert on their'design, manufacture and use.
