to increase the mineralization and to change the type of the water
from calcium carbonate to calcium. sulfate or sodium sulfate.
Wa.ter from. the bedrock differs widely in mineralization from onB
stra.tigraphic unit to o.nother, as well as within units; the specific
conductance of ground wllter that was sampled ranged from 836 to
5,04:0 micromhos pet' em. In most of the units the water is of the
sodium bicarbono.te type, is soft, and has n. relatively' high 6oneen-
tration of fluoride. W n.ter :f1'Om the Dawson arkose WQS the least
mineralized of the water snmpled, md water from Sorne strata in
the Laramie formation WI1S the most minemlized. Water from the
bedroclc probably is poor for irrigation and ranges from poor' to
good for public. supply and domestic use.
It would be advisl1ble to study long-tenn changes in quality of
water from key ~ells, to determine the source and extent or the con-
to.m.ination by petroleum waste in the valleys of Snnd Creek and the
South, Platte River and to' determine the extent of and potential
:for development of the aquifer that produces relatively soft water in
the vicinity of Greeley.
