A special committee has been
appointed to carry out the study, which will review the extant body of scientific data and studies
regarding Colorado River hydrology, including paleohydrological and dendrochronological
studies. The study will also consider other hydro-climatic trends that might influence future
hydrologic variability across the Colorado River basin. The study's overarching objective will
be to produce a report aimed toward an improved hydrological baseline for water project
operations and water management decisions across the Colorado River basin and other parts of
the western United States, especially during periods of extended drought. The committee will
focus its efforts on: a) science and technology, which includes historical and pre-historical
streamflow and climate records, and hydrologic modeling and methods, and b) science
institutions and water management practices, which includes institutional arrangements for
gathering and evaluating hydro-climatic data, and the implications of those data for systems
operations and water management practices.

The committee intends to meet four times during 2005-06 and plans to issue its final
report in Summer 2006. Its first meeting is scheduled for July 18-19 in Boulder, Colorado.
Subsequent meeting schedules and agendas will be posted on The National Academies web site
at http://www.nationalacademies.org/wstb. The committee is chaired by Dr. Ernest Smerdon, Professor
Emeritus at the University of Arizona. Jeffrey Jacobs of the NRC Water Science and
Technology Board is serving as study director. For more information on the study and schedule,
please contact Dr. Jacobs at iiacobs@nas.edu.

Names and affili,\tions of committee members are listed below.
