In the past months some funding has been made available to the <br />counties to assist with the expense of combating WNV, most notably through spraying. <br />The "season" has now come to an end. <br /> <br />One interesting approach to combating West Nile has been application of an old, seldom-used, <br />state program for the landfilling of old worn tires. The tires, often used in many ways on almost <br />every farm and ranch, collect and retain water --- serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, the <br />insect responsible for spreading the disease. Now, with the real threat of West Nile Virus, the <br />tire disposal program is seeing a significant increase in its use. No recurrence interval as been <br />calculated for West Nile Virus, but it has spread nationwide in the past five years and eradication <br />of the disease is nowhere yet in sight. <br /> <br />24 <br />
