<br />The city-owned utility sold 2AOO acre feet, or about 780 million gallons, to Colorado <br />Canal farmers, who get preference under long-standing agreements. Fort Lyon Canal <br />sought water about the same time and bought 3,781 acre feet, or 1.2 billion gallons. Both <br />Arkansas Valley irrigation groups paid $11 per acre foot for the water. <br /> <br />In contrast, Springs Utilities customers use about 80,000 acre feet a year, or about 26 <br />billion gallons. <br /> <br />The water sales represent about 10 percent of the Springs usage. <br /> <br />The city also delivered 2,000 acre feet, or about 650 million gallons, to the Colorado <br />Division of Wildlife at the negotiated price of $15 per acre foot. The water will be <br />added to the permanent water storage pool at John Martin Reservoir west of Lamar, <br />according to a press release. Sen. Ken Salazar met at <br />Colorado State University-Pueblo with area water providers and districts that have <br />been negotiating the Preferred Storage Options Plan for more than two years. Salazar <br />suggested a new approach that would allow a feasibility study of enlargement of Lake <br />Pueblo and Turquoise Lake, as proposed by PSOP, but without any of the <br />intergovernmental agreements (IGAs) attached. He also wants to study the feasibility of <br />building a multipurpose flood control, recreation and water supply dam on Fountain <br />Creek. <br /> <br />Salazar asked the negotiators to think about his proposal over the next two months, <br />while the Southeastern district researches to see if the proposal to shelve the <br /> <br />22 <br />
