001203

- -...- ."'"'\. ~ r'\

Conclusion

Standard practices in the area of recreation methodologies suggest that user surveys are
the best method to obtain information about user preferences at different flow levels. The
results of our observations and user interviews do not demonstrate that 1700cfs (and not
even 1400cfs orlOOOcfs) are the minimum flows necessary to obtain an objective quality
recreational experience for top level freestyle kayakers (advanced to professional).
Moreover, the user surveys and observations suggest that "the lowest flow" required to
provide a "quality recreation experience" for top level freestyle kayakers is more
appropriately in the 500cfs to 700cfs range. This recommended flow is similar to the
minimum flow listed for play waves which appears in the Yampa River Recreational
Uses Recommended Flows Table provided by the City of Steamboat Springs (Wilson,
2003).

11

Yampa River Freestyle Kayaking Study - August 2005
Vital Resources
