Metis, Integrated Science Program Manager <br /> <br /> <br />Subject: <br /> <br />Distribution of Final Reports by Schmidt et aI. & ams e aI. - Synthesis of Fine- <br />Sediment and related Geomorphic data of the Colorado River Ecosystem Below <br />Glen Canyon Dam <br /> <br />The attached reports, entitled: <br /> <br />System-Wide Changes in the Distribution of Fine-Sediment in the Colorado River Corridor Between Glen Canyon <br />Dam and Bright Angel Creek, Arizona, by Schmidt et aI., and <br /> <br />The Degraded Reach: Rate and Pattern of Bed and Bank Adjustment of the Colorado River in the 25 km <br />Immediately Downstream from Glen Canyon Dam, <br /> <br />have recently been accepted by the GCMRC as the second and third of three final reports prepared by the Schmidt <br />and Topping research team. This project was awarded through a competitive process initially in 1998, and was <br />funded in two phases through 2001. <br /> <br />Information contained in these two reports supplements the fir~t of the three final reports, published by Topping et <br />al. in 2003 (see previous distribution of December 2003), and reflects the authors' research efforts funded by the <br />GCMRC as part of synthesis of historical sediment and geomorphic data. <br /> <br />. ----. <br /> <br />These later reports address the major geomorphic synthesis objectives related to evaluation of historical changes in <br />fme-sediment deposits during both the pre- and post-dam eras, with respect to the Colorado River ecosystem <br />between Lees Ferry and Phantom Ranch. <br /> <br />Written by researchers with long-term familiarity with the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam, these final <br />reports are intended to: 1) complete the geomorphic synthesis research initiated by the GCMRC under its first Chief, <br />L. David Garrett and 2) meet the obligations for providing stakeholders and decision makers with an integrated <br />evaluation on the effectiveness of Record- of-Decision operations in restoring and maintaining sand bars and related <br />habitats of the Colorado River Ecosystem. <br /> <br />Please review these reports and share them with your staff and other interested parties.
