0014~_1

DEMONSTRATION OF IM:PROVED IRRIGATION PRACTICES.TO PROMOTE
WATER MANAGEl.'\1ENT AND CONSERVATION-PURGATOIRE RIVER
HYDROLOGIC UNIT

Grant Awards Program
Cooperative Agreement NO. 6-FC-60-08180
Bureau of Reclamation, Pueblo/Loveland, Colorado
Spanish Peaks/Purgatoire River Soil Conservation District

CUMULATIVE PROGRESS REPORT:

FY1996(Aug 24, 1996-Sep 30, 1996)
FY1997(Oct 01, 1996-Sep 30, 1997)

Following the approval of the proposed project by the Bureau ,of Reclamation in August of
1996, the Spanish Peaks/Purgatoire River Soil Conservation District (SCD) set specific
goals to initiate the project. The three goals were to 1) impleDl~nt a process to select
participants for the project. 2) select the initial project participants, and 3) initiate the
conservation planning process for the selected participants.

The solicitation of interested producers was based on the results of the scoping process that
was conducted prior to the development of the proposal. As a review, the scoping process
results identified. the following as tb.e top two(2) technical barriers/problems. and
opportUnities related to the irrigated agricultural enterprises within the hydrologic unit:

L Conveyance losses
2. Dealing with trash/debris in the irrigation water supply.
3. Demonstration and education were identified as opponunities

Secondly, the scoping process participants identifie~ what they thought to be the most
beneficial Best Management Practices (BMP's) to address the barriers and problems.
These were identified as follows:

1. Underground pipeline
2. Land leveling
3. Gated pipe
4. Design and construction of effective, inexpensive trash screens
5. Tailwater pits
6. Subsurface drainage
7. Irrigation Water Management

CUMULATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS (August, 24, 1996-September 30,1997)

Accomplishment #1. The Spanish Peaks/Purgatoire River SCD selected three(3) producers
[Charles Gyurman, Roy Morris, Tom Miller] under the South Side irrigation canal as the
initial project cooperators. The selections were based on inventory of conservation
treatment needs, interest by the producers, and objectives of the project.

Accomplishment #2. The Natural Resources Conservation Service field office staff
completed the inventory of the site specific resource concerns for each of the three
producers and developed conservation treatment alternatives.
